• John knew the theatre from both sides of the footlights having taken part in many amateur productions as well as photographing the professional stage. Indeed John and Rowena met and became engaged during rehearsals for in St Margaret’s Social Club’s production of Pride and Prejudice, playing Darcy and Elizabeth. Their first production after their marriage was in A Mid Summer’s Night’s Dream playing Oberon and Titania. They then went on to become founder members of Southend Shakespeare Society and also members of the Southend Drama Society – which Rowena’s mother was for many years their Producer and also her grandson Bruce was their stage manager.
